Our story

From investing in companies to advising the people who own them.

Austral Capital grew out of an investing practice rooted in high-growth and technology-driven businesses. That heritage still shapes how we think about strategy, capital allocation, transactions and long-term value.

Years of investing in and building companies — through growth, financing, strategic change and exit — became years of transaction and board experience. Advisory was the natural extension: the same judgment, applied on our clients' side of the table.

Today Austral works selectively with founders, shareholders and companies facing consequential financial and strategic decisions. Technology-driven and high-growth companies are the territory we grew out of — and where we bring particular perspective and depth.

Gonzalo Miranda

Gonzalo Miranda is the founder and a Partner of Austral Capital. He has extensive experience investing in and working alongside companies in Chile and Latin America through growth, financing, strategic change and exit.

His experience combines investing, capital allocation, corporate strategy and active involvement with management teams and boards across different industries. Earlier in his career, he was Managing Director of Endeavor Chile.

Gonzalo is a Kauffman Fellow and holds an MBA from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, as well as an Industrial Engineering degree and a Master of Science in Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He is co-author of Financiamiento Inteligente.

Erwin Boronig

Erwin Boronig is a Managing Director of Austral Capital and brings nearly three decades of experience in corporate finance, M&A and financing. He has advised and participated in transactions involving company sales, capital raising and financing across different stages of business development.

His experience combines corporate finance, negotiation, ownership matters and long-standing work alongside business owners and management teams. He has also served as a company director and professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Erwin holds a degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and is co-author of Financiamiento Inteligente.

Hiroshi Wald

Hiroshi Wald is a Managing Director of Austral Capital, based in Berkeley, California. A founder, investor and mentor, he has spent his career working with technology companies and their founders across the United States and Latin America.

His experience combines supporting technology-driven companies, investing, and developing growth strategies. He founded and sold the wireless startup Zingdata, led Competitive Insights, a natural-language processing firm, and has mentored startups on product–market fit, go-to-market and scaling. Based in the Bay Area, he gives Austral a direct presence in the US technology ecosystem and a practical understanding of how companies grow between Silicon Valley and Latin America. His earlier career includes TWG, Hill and Knowlton, a Coro Fellowship and the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.

Hiroshi is a graduate of UCLA and has served on the Executive Board of the MIT/Stanford Venture Lab.

Giving back

Sharing experience has always been part of Austral's culture.

Over the years, Gonzalo Miranda and Erwin Boronig have contributed to the development of entrepreneurs and business leaders through teaching, mentoring and involvement with organizations such as Endeavor.

Both have taught entrepreneurship and finance courses and are co-authors of Financiamiento Inteligente, a practical guide to financing growth and incorporating investors.
